How to Set Any Page as Your Homepage in WordPress

In WordPress, your homepage is the first thing visitors see when they land on your website. By default, WordPress displays your latest blog posts on the homepage. However, many website owners prefer to show a static page, like a welcome page, a portfolio, or a custom landing page, instead of the latest blog posts.

Why Set a Custom Page as Your Homepage?

Before we get into the steps, let’s quickly talk about why you might want to set a custom page as your homepage:

  • Professional appearance: A custom homepage can make your website look more polished and tailored to your brand.
  • Better user experience: You can design your homepage to highlight key information, such as your services, portfolio, or contact details.
  • Focused messaging: You can control what your visitors see first, leading them to take specific actions, like signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase.

Step 1: Log in to Your WordPress Dashboard

The first thing you need to do is log in to your WordPress site:

  1. Open your web browser and go to your WordPress login page, usually www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin.
  2. Enter your username and password to access your WordPress dashboard.

Once logged in, you’ll be on your main dashboard.

Step 2: Create the Page You Want to Set as Homepage (If You Haven’t Already)

If you don’t have a page you want to set as the homepage yet, you need to create one. Here’s how:

  1. On the left-hand menu, hover over Pages and then click Add New.
  2. Give your page a title (e.g., “Welcome,” “About Us,” or “Home”).
  3. You can add content like text, images, or videos to this page. You can also use page builders like Elementor or WPBakery to design the page if you want.
  4. Once you’re happy with the page, click Publish.

Now you have a page ready to set as your homepage!

Step 3: Go to the “Settings” Section

Next, let’s change your homepage setting:

  1. On the left-hand menu of your dashboard, find and click on Settings.
  2. From the dropdown, click Reading. This will open your Reading Settings page.

Step 4: Set Your Custom Homepage

Now you’re on the Reading Settings page, where you can control what appears on your homepage:

  1. Under the Your homepage displays section, you’ll see two options:
    • Your latest posts (this is the default setting).
    • A static page (this option allows you to choose a custom page as your homepage).
  2. Select the A static page option.
  3. After selecting “A static page,” two dropdown menus will appear:
    • Homepage: Choose the page you want to set as your homepage from this dropdown. Select the page you created earlier or any other page you wish to display as your homepage.
    • Posts page: This is where your blog posts will be displayed. If you want to show a different page for blog posts, you can choose one here, but if you don’t want to display any blog posts, leave this option blank.
  4. After making your selections, scroll down and click the Save Changes button to update your settings.

Step 5: Check Your New Homepage

Now, visit your website’s front end to see the new homepage in action. Type in your website’s address (e.g., www.yourwebsite.com), and you should see the page you selected as your homepage. If everything looks good, you’ve successfully set your custom page as the homepage!

Important Notes:

  • A static homepage displays a specific page instead of your latest blog posts on the main page.
  • A “Posts page” creates a separate page that displays a list of your blog posts.
  • The “Front page” template specifically designates a page for display as the homepage.
