How to Create a Menu with Pages in WordPress

Creating a menu with pages in WordPress is an essential step in organizing your website and helping visitors find important information quickly. Menus allow users to navigate easily between your website’s pages, whether it’s the homepage, about page, contact page, or any other content you want to highlight.

Step 1: Access the Menu Settings

  1. Log in to Your WordPress Dashboard
    • Go to your website’s URL and log in with your username and password.
    • Once logged in, you’ll be taken to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the Menu Settings
    • From the dashboard, go to Appearance > Menus. This is where you will create and manage your website menus.

Step 2: Create a New Menu

  1. Click “Create a New Menu”
    • If you don’t have any menus set up yet, you’ll see an option to Create a New Menu. Click on it.
  2. Name Your Menu
    • Give your new menu a name (e.g., “Main Menu” or “Header Menu”). This name is for your reference only.
    • After naming your menu, click Create Menu.

Step 3: Add Pages to Your Menu

  1. Choose Pages to Add
    • On the left side of the screen, you’ll see a list of your website’s Pages. These are the individual pages you’ve created, such as “Home,” “About,” “Contact,” etc.
  2. Select the Pages
    • Select the pages you want to add to your menu by checking the box next to each page.
    • Once you’ve selected the pages, click Add to Menu.
  3. Rearrange Pages (Optional)
    • After adding pages, you can change their order by dragging and dropping the items in the menu structure.
    • Simply click on a page and drag it up or down to place it in your desired position.

Step 4: Choose the Menu Location

  1. Assign the Menu to a Location
    • In WordPress, most themes have predefined areas where menus can appear (like the top of the page, sidebar, or footer). Under Menu Settings, you’ll see options like:
      • Primary Menu (usually the main navigation at the top)
      • Footer Menu
      • Social Links Menu
  2. Select the Menu Location
    • Choose where you want your menu to appear. For a basic navigation menu, choose Primary Menu.
    • After selecting the location, click Save Menu.

Step 5: Review and Adjust the Menu

  1. Check Your Menu
    • Visit your website and check how the menu looks. You should see the pages you added, listed in the order you arranged them.
  2. Make Adjustments (if needed)
    • If you want to add or remove pages, just go back to Appearance > Menus. From there, you can make any changes you need.
    • To remove a page, click the dropdown arrow next to the page in the menu structure and click Remove.

Optional: Adding Custom Links or Categories

In addition to pages, you can also add custom links or post categories to your menu.

  • Custom Links: You can add any link to your menu (e.g., an external website, a blog post, or a specific URL). Just go to the Custom Links section on the left, enter the URL, give it a label, and click Add to Menu.
  • Categories: If you have a blog and want to link to specific categories (e.g., “Tech,” “Lifestyle”), go to the Categories section, select the categories, and click Add to Menu.
